Agia Napa (Ayia Napa), is located southeast of the islands coast, it s known all over Europe as a famous tourist resort. It is one of Cyprus's most popular beach resorts. Normally the little village has less than 1000 inhabitants, but during summer season it hosts more than 10.000 tourists per day. The beaches are really fine: thin and fine sand, hidden among a chain of rocky boulders that form many small and cosy bays. The main centre of the district is Paralimni, 3 miles north of Agia Napa itself. East of the village is Protaras, known for its lively nightlife and partyful people.
Just in the centre of Agia Napa you 'll find a fine monastery At the entrance an old fig tree. Inthe court an octogonal fountain on the base of it the portaits of the woman who fouded this monastery and also of her mother and father who forbade her to marry.
Agia Napa has cleaned up it's alternative Ibiza reputation recently and is now much more family orientated.
Protaras
Part of the Famagusta Bay area, Protaras is sheltered from the prevailing north easterly winds and thus enjoys calmer seas. This makes it very popular with local water-sport enthusiasts- such as water skiers and windsurfers. A characteristic feature of the area around Protaras are the hundreds of windmills once used to tap underground fresh-water re serves for irrigating the citrus groves. Most of them are now defunct, but they create a charming landscape much enjoyed by visitors.
The region between Protaras and Larnaca is known as the Kokkinohoria, or "Red Villages"' a name derived from the fertile red soil which makes it the richest agricultural area of Cyprus. The Kokkinohoria accounts for 90% of all potato exports and provides an income of about 100 million Cyprus pounds a year. This flourishing agricultural system relies heavily on irrigation, and in particular the Southern Conveyor Project, which brings watertrom the Kourris dam on the southern slopes of the Troodos mountains 100 km away, to a huge water reservoir at Akhna from where it is distributed to individual farms. As a result of the project the severe water shortages which were once common have become a thing of the past.
