Cyprus is situated in the Eastern part of the Mediterranean sea lying at the meeting point of Europe, Africa and Asia and close to the busy shipping and air routes linking Europe with the Arab world and the Far East. It has an area of 9251 sq. km (3572 sq. ml. ). It has a strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, Asia and Africa and therefore is a jumping off point for visiting places like Syria, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel, and Greece. The island is about 4 hours flying from London, 3 hours from Moscow, 1 hour from Cairo, 3 hours from Abu Dhabi and about 12 hours direct from New York.
The landscape varies between rugged coastlines, sandy beaches, rocky hills and forest-covered mountains. The Troodos Mountains in the centre of the island rise to almost 1950 m (6400 ft) and provide good skiing during the winter.
Cyprus is the legendary birthplace of the goddess of beauty, love, sex and passion, the beautiful Aphrodite. According to Hesiod's Theogony, the goddess, who was also known as Kypris or the Cyprian, emerged fully grown from the sea where the severed genitals of the god Uranus were cast by his son, Kronos, causing the sea to foam (in Greek: Aphros). The legendary site of the Aphrodite's birth from the foam is at 'Petra tou Romiou' (or 'Aphrodite's Rock'), a large stack in the sea close to the coastal cliffs near Paphos. Throughout ancient history, Cyprus was a flourishing centre for the cultic worship of Aphrodite.
Her birth was famously depicted by the artist Botticelli in "The Birth of Venus".
The location of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean gives it special religious significance. The island is a treasure trove of religious icons, mosaics and artifacts, as well as ecclesiastical architecture, because religion, which has played a vital part in the life of Cyprus for thousands of years, is woven deeply into the fabric of the island.
